Indirect Costs Policy

The Lung Association supports only the direct costs of research. No funding is to be used for indirect costs of research. The definition of indirect costs of research for the purposes of this policy is, costs which cannot be directly associated with a particular research program or operating grant including costs associated with the general operation and  maintenance of facilities (from laboratories to libraries); the management of the research process (from grant management to commercialization); and regulation and safety compliance (including human ethics, animal care and environmental assessment).

Respiratory Health Effects of Long COVID Operating Grant

Description

The Canadian Lung Association in partnership with the CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (CIHR-ICRH) developed the Respiratory Health Effects of Long COVID Operating Grant competition. This competition aims to fund respiratory research projects that address one or more of the following research areas:

• Treatment and quality of life;
• Mechanism(s) of disease; and/or
• Models of care for Long COVID.

The proposed research projects can include pilot studies, feasibility studies, translational studies, and/or novel and innovative approaches to address issues related to the respiratory health effects of long COVID. Submissions to this competition can be new project ideas or the continuation of existing projects as they relate to the respiratory health effects of long COVID.

Funding Available

• The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $120,000 enough to fund three (3) grants.
• The maximum amount per grant is $40,000 per year for one year.
  
  • Of this $40,000, applicants must allocate a minimum of $5,000 for undergraduate studentships in 2022 or 2023.

Eligibility Criteria

1. The nominated principal investigator (NPI) must be an Early- or Mid-Career Researcher within 0-15 years of their first independent research appointment at a Canadian Institution by the application submission deadline date.
2. Applications must be relevant to at least one or more of the identified research areas as they relate to the respiratory health effects of long COVID. Applications deemed non-relevant will be withdrawn from the competition and will not be considered by the peer review panel.
3. Studies previously funded by CIHR as part of the COVID-19 Response are not eligible.
4. Appropriate facilities must be available for the research. An institution through which the funds will be administered also needs to be identified and this institution must be authorized to administer CIHR funds (see a list of authorized institutions at: http://cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/36374.html).
5. Applicants may only submit one application as a principal investigator or a co-principal investigator.
6. At the time of registration and for the duration of the award, the principal investigator, co-principal investigator, co-investigator(s), and collaborator(s) are not eligible if they hold or have previously held funding, directly or indirectly, from the tobacco and/or vaping industry.

CIHR-ICRH/AZ Canada/CLA Emerging Clinician Scientist Award (ECSA)

Description

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research(CIHR)-Institute of Cardiovascular and Respiratory Health (ICRH)/AstraZeneca (AZ) Canada/Canadian Lung Association (CLA) Emerging Clinician Scientist Award (ECSA) is an establishment grant program for clinician scientists (e.g., Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Medicine-Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Dental Sciences, PhD-Respiratory Therapist, PhD-Registered Nurse, PhD-Physiotherapist, PhD-Occupational Therapist or equivalent) in the first five (5) years of their first faculty appointment (or first academic appointment by September 1, 2019) that provides them with a minimum of 50% protected research time. These funds can only be used to support the research program of the clinician scientists (i.e., the funds cannot be allocated to the salary or benefits of the principal investigator/applicant). Priority areas include basic and translational research programs in chronic respiratory disease, including but not limited to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, cough, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis (CF), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), alpha one antitrypsin deficiency (AATD), interstitial lung disease (ILD), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Objectives

The CIHR-ICRH/AZ Canada/CLA Emerging Clinician Scientist Award is expected to:

• Increase research capacity in the area of chronic respiratory diseases;
• Support the research career of promising clinician scientists;
• Produce high-quality research in chronic respiratory diseases;
• Contribute to knowledge translation activities.

Available Funding

The total amount available for this competition is $400,000, which is sufficient to fund up to 2 awards.  The maximum amount per grant is $100,000 per year. This support may be provided for a maximum of two (2) years. ECSA funds may only be used to support research conducted in Canada. All grants become tenable April 1, 2020 following announcement of the competition results in October 2019.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Principal Investigators will have a full-time academic or institutional appointment in Canada. However, under special circumstances, applications from other scientifically qualified individuals may be considered. In such circumstances, the research must be conducted at a Canadian institution and Principal Investigators must have an academic or institutional appointment as of September 1, 2019. Any applicant in an adjunct position must submit a letter from their dean/chair/division director to clarify their specific appointment (i.e., amount of protected time available, local infrastructure in place). This information can be included within the institutional support letter.
2. At the time of application submission deadline, no more than five (5) years may have passed since the date of the first faculty appointment at the Assistant or Clinical Assistant Professor level or equivalent. This would include Adjunct positions in a research track for which the applicant is eligible to write a Grant-in-Aid/operating grant (as a Principal Investigator).
3. In order to increase capacity and allow as many researchers as possible to benefit from this program, at the time of application submission deadline, principal investigators are ineligible if they hold or have already held peer reviewed grants as Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) with a total sum value of $300,000 or more. This includes, but is not limited to, peer-reviewed funding from CIHR, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), or Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). In addition, those currently holding another similar salary award, such as a Canada Research Chair Award, New Investigator Award or Early Career Investigator (ECI) award from any source will be considered ineligible.
4. The applicant must have a track record of research publications and excellence and be a Doctor of Medicine (MD) with graduate research training (i.e., MSc, MPH, MEng), Doctor of Dental Sciences (DDS) with graduate research training, or other clinician (i.e., Nurse, Physiotherapist, Respiratory Therapist, Occupational Therapist) with doctoral-level graduate research training.
5. ECSA applications must be supported by the university or institution at which the applicant will conduct the proposed research. The university or institution is expected to guarantee the applicant appropriate academic rank, integration, protected research time, structured mentorship, space, equipment, career path, and start-up operating support.
6. The Dean, Department Head, or institutional equivalent must guarantee protected research time for the applicant.
7. Applicants with a health professional degree at a doctoral level (e.g. MD; or other regulated accredited health professionals who have a PhD) who hold a license to practice in a province or territory of Canada must be guaranteed at least a minimum of 50% protected research time.
8. Applicants with a PhD degree or applicants with a health professional degree at a doctoral level (e.g., MD; or other regulated accredited health professionals who have a PhD) who do not hold a license to practice in a province or territory of Canada must be guaranteed at least a minimum of 50% protected research time.
9. The NPA must have successfully completed one of the sex- and gender-based analysis training modules available online through the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health and have submitted a Certificate of Completion by application deadline.
10. At the time of submission, and for the duration of the award, principal investigators are ineligible if they hold or have already held funding, directly or indirectly, from the tobacco and/or cannabis industry.

Breathing as One - Boehringer Ingelheim Canada/CIHR-ICRH: COPD Catalyst Grant

Description

The Breathing as One - Boehringer Ingelheim Canada/CIHR-ICRH: COPD Catalyst Grant competition promotes innovative research related to the treatment/quality of life, mechanism of disease, and health care services for COPD. Catalyst grants are scalable research studies that can be pilot studies, feasibility studies, translational studies, and novel and innovative approaches.

Applicants should be creative and think broadly. To this end, submissions to this grant competition should only be made for new project ideas and not the continuation of an existing project.

Even though your long-term goals for the project may extend beyond the means and timeline of this grant, within one year, the results of the catalyst projects should enable the development of funding proposals that are eligible for submission to national or international peer-reviewed competitions.

Funding Available

Funding for this competition has been provided by a donation from Boehringer Ingelheim Canada to The Lung Association's Breathing as One campaign for lung research and a partnership with the CIHR–ICRH. Boehringer Ingelheim Canada is not involved with adjudication or the funding decisions for this competition.

The partnership with Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)-Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (ICRH) increased the total funding amount available for the 2020 competition to $120,000. The maximum amount per grant is $30,000. The funding is for one year and is non-renewable.

Of this $120,000:

• $60,000 is available to fund 2 grants for nominated principal applicants who are Early Career Investigators (ECIs). An ECI is defined as a researcher who has held an independent research appointment for a period of 0 to 60 months at the competition deadline date. All those who held ECI status as of March 1, 2020—or who secured their first academic appointment after this date—will have their status extended by one year.
• Any remaining funds will be applied to the next highest ranked application.

These awards were formerly known as Canadian Lung Association (CLA) - Canadian Respiratory Health Professionals (CRHP) Grants. The awards have been renamed to reflect the funding organization. The Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) and its CRHP Clinical Assembly remain partners in providing oversight and expertise in the peer review process.

Eligibility requirements for applicants have been broadened and awards are now open to members and non-members of CTS and CRHP who are conducting lung research that aligns with the Lung Association mandate and a respiratory health professional from a recognized clinically based discipline (e.g., registered nurse, nurse practitioner; physiotherapist; respiratory therapist; pharmacist; cardio-pulmonary technologist; polysomnographic technologist; kinesiologist; dietician; occupational therapist; social worker; or psychologist) (MDs are not eligible for Breathing as One: Allied Health Research Grant support as a Principal Investigator). Information and policies are provided in the submission guidelines.

The research awards program of the Lung Association was established in 1959. It is financed through donations to the provincial lung associations across Canada. Where possible, the Lung Association partners with outside organizations to match and/or leverage available funding. Based on the success of this approach and to significantly increase the number of outstanding applicants who will receive funding, we are excited to announce that beginning in 2019, CLA research awards are awarded contingent upon the awardee securing matching funds. The formula for matching is award-dependent, as described in the funding sections of the submission guidelines. There are a number of options for applicants to pursue matching funds as these may be contributed by a number of sources, including the trainee supervisor, host institution, Provincial Lung Association, and/or a research partner. Applicants are required to identify matching funds sources and are encouraged to reach out to their host institution, as well as other funding organizations, including provincial lung associations to determine whether they will participate in matching funds using their provincial Breathing as One funds or other available resources.

The objective of the Breathing as One: Allied Health Grant is to promote research in areas that contribute to the field of respiratory health in Canada. Studies should include research related to an applied or clinical question using quantitative or qualitative methodologies. The study may include a basic science component but the primary research questions must be applied or clinically focused.

The principal investigator, who is considered the principal applicant, must be a respiratory health professional from a recognized clinically based discipline (e.g., registered nurse, nurse practitioner; physiotherapist; respiratory therapist; pharmacist; cardio-pulmonary technologist; polysomnographic technologist; kinesiologist; dietician; occupational therapist; social worker; or psychologist) (MDs are not eligible for Breathing as One: Allied Health Research Grant support as a Principal Investigator).
3. Affiliated with a Canadian health care organization or educational institution that is authorized to administer CIHR grant and award funds (see a list of authorized institutions at: http://cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/36374.html).
4. Pursuing a research study with respiratory health as the major focus.
5. At the time of submission, and for the duration of the award, individuals who currently hold or have held and/or are being supervised by individuals holding or have held funding, directly or indirectly, from tobacco and/or cannabis industry are not eligible.
6. Applicants must be able to secure matching funds for the one (1) year duration of the award (see section below for formula). The applicant must include within their application a signed letter guaranteeing the matching funds for the duration of the award.

3. Enrolled in a graduate (thesis-based) program at the Masters or Doctoral level during the funding period (September 2021-August 2022). Individuals who have applied to a graduate program but have not received acceptance may apply to this award. The award, however, will be conditional on acceptance into the program.
4. Pursuing a research study with respiratory health as the major focus.
5. At the time of submission, and for the duration of the award, individuals who currently hold or have held and/or are being supervised by individuals holding or have held funding, directly or indirectly, from tobacco and/or cannabis industry are not eligible.
6. Able to secure matching funds for the one (1) year duration of this award (see section below for formula). The applicant must include within their application a letter signed by the supervisor guaranteeing the matching funds for the duration of the award.

These awards were formerly known as Canadian Lung Association (CLA) - Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) Fellowships and Studentships. The awards have been renamed to reflect the funding organization. The Canadian Thoracic Society and its Canadian Respiratory Health Professionals (CHRP) Clinical Assembly remain partners in providing oversight and expertise in the peer review process.

Eligibility requirements for applicants have been broadened and awards are now open to members and non-members of CTS and CRHP who are conducting lung research that aligns with the Lung Association mandate and a respiratory health professional from a recognized clinically based discipline (e.g., registered nurse, nurse practitioner; physiotherapist; respiratory therapist; pharmacist; cardio- pulmonary technologist; polysomnographic technologist; kinesiologist; dietician; occupational therapist; social worker; or psychologist).

This competition is open to Doctoral students and PhD or MD researchers who are conducting respiratory research that aligns with the Lung Association mandate and the objectives identified for this competition. Information and policies are provided in the submission guidelines.

The research awards program of the Lung Association was established in 1959. It is financed through donations to the provincial lung associations across Canada. Where possible, the Lung Association partners with outside organizations to match and/or leverage available funding. Based on the success of this approach and to significantly increase the number of outstanding applicants who will receive funding, we are excited to announce that beginning in 2019, CLA research awards are awarded contingent upon the awardee securing matching funds. The formula for matching is award-dependent, as described in the funding sections in the submission guidelines. There are a number of options for applicants to pursue matching funds as these may be contributed by a number of sources, including the trainee supervisor, host institution, Provincial Lung Association, and/or a research partner. Applicants are required to identify matching funds sources and are encouraged to reach out to their host institution, as well as other funding organizations, including provincial lung associations to determine whether they will participate in matching funds using their provincial Breathing as One funds or other available resources.

The objective of the Breathing as One Fellowship and Studentship awards is to build Canadian research capacity that contributes to the field of respiratory health in Canada. Funding may support individuals completing research related to basic, applied or clinical study using quantitative or qualitative methodologies.

Eligibility

Priority will be given to a Canadian citizen, permanent Canadian resident or landed immigrant. These awards are normally held at Canadian institutions.

To be eligible for a Breathing as One Fellowship or Studentship Award the applicant must meet the following criteria:

1. Pursuing a research study with respiratory health as the major focus.
2. Studentship applicants - should be enrolled or accepted in a graduate (thesis based) program at the Doctoral level at a Canadian academic institution. Individuals who have applied to a graduate program but have not received acceptance may apply for a Studentship award. The award, however, will be conditional on acceptance into the program. Candidates are only eligible to apply for the Studentship award in the first three (3) years of their doctoral studies.
3. Fellowship applicants - should be working under supervision of a faculty member at an accredited Canadian academic institution. Under special circumstances, an applicant may pursue a fellowship in another country; however, the applicant must justify why he/she could not find the same kind of training in Canada and he/she must have plans to pursue a career in research in Canada.
4. A Fellowship or Studentship awardee may not be in receipt of another major award at the same time as holding a Fellowship or Studentship Award from the Lung Association - National Office.
5. At the time of submission, and for the duration of the award, individuals who currently hold or have held and/or are being supervised by individuals holding or have held funding, directly or indirectly, from tobacco and/or cannabis industry are not eligible.
6. Applicants must be able to secure matching funds for the one (1) year duration of the Fellowship or Studentship award (see guidelines for formulas). The applicant must include within their application a letter signed by the supervisor guaranteeing the matching funds for the duration of the award.

To qualify for funding, candidates are asked to complete two (2) steps:

1. Register:

Applicants are required to provide their name, the names of their supervisor(s) and referees, institution, the project title, keywords, and a maximum (one) 1 page abstract of your research project.

2. Submit Application:

   Upload one (1) electronic copy of the application to: https://form.simplesurvey.com/f/l/bao-trainee-competition-2021-application by August 27, 2021 at 3:30pm EDT. The electronic copy must include a completed copy of the application form with signatures and all the relevant documents (excluding Referee Forms, which will be sent in separately by the referee).
